1: The majority should not be allowed to vote on the right of any minority. What is the abled could put the rights of the disabled on a ballot? Or white people out a measure on a ballot which would restrict the rights of a racial minority? As U.S. District Court Judge Vaughn Walker “Proposition 8 fails to advance any rational basis in singling out gay men and lesbians for denial of a marriage license.Indeed, the evidence shows Proposition 8 does nothing more than enshrine in the California Constitution the notion that opposite-sex couples are superior to same-sex couples.”
2: The arguments made against gay marriage are unsound and/or do not belong in the laws mandated by a country without a state religion. These arguments include but are not limited to:
- “Gay marriages cannot result in children”: Does this mean that heterosexual couples that cannot have children due to fertility issues or those couples that make the decision not to have children for any number of reasons should not be allowed to marry?
- “God says marriage is between a man and a woman”: Here is the wonderful United States of America we have separation of church and state, therefore God’s law doesn’t belong anywhere near our constitutional law. Furthermore, there are so many biblical laws that are commonly disregarded such as getting a haircut, wearing a poly-cotton blend and eating lobster. Why is it that people so often cling to those things that make others people’s life difficult?
- “Kids should have a mom and a dad” :Many children that result from a heterosexual relationship end up living without the influence of one of their parents, such as those who were blessed with deadbeat drug dealer parents or those who lost a parent in a car crash. If your spouse dies in a tragic accident, thus leaving your child without one of their parents, does that mean you should never have been married? Short answer, NO. Long answer, NO.
- “If we let people marry people of the same sex we will have to let them marry dogs and rocks”: Now, I’m not even sure I know where to start with this one except how is it logical that letting two consenting adults decide to get married would somehow lead to people attempting to legally marry animals or inanimate objects?
Am I saying that you, the individual, should not have the right to disagree with homosexuality? Of course not. I’m just saying that legally speaking there are no grounds for denying same sex couples the right to marry and receive the benefits of said marriages.
PS: Yes I know this happened like a month ago and I was very excited about it but I have a newborn child and haven’t been blogging as much as I would like.
