Don’t worry it gets better. You’ll grow out of your all black, all the time phase. The planet is bigger than your private school fishbowl and you’ll get to see the world. It really is amazing as they say it is.Stop fighting with your mother. She might seem overbearing and old and unyielding now but really she’s just trying to save you from heart ache and be a good mom, even though some of it might be a little bit misguided. In a few years she’ll be the very first person you turn to when something goes wrong or something goes right or nothing’s going on at all.
Ask him out! It turns out to be one of the best decisions you make as a teenager. The fact that he’s over a foot taller than you starts mattering less and less the more you kiss him. And he’ll love you forever, no really. Ring on your finger and everything. You will have the most amazing honeymoon.
Embrace the fact that you don’t drink or do drugs. It turns out your brain cells start really working in your favor come college instead of making you look like a dork, as they do in high school. You’ll get a couple of wild college nights, live to tell the tale and have that be enough. Some things never change.
Learn to text message. It’s amazing.
Savor the time with your brother. I know there are times when he gets a little annoying now but he’ll be your best friend in a couple years time , you’ll miss him terribly when you go away to college and you are both going to need each other to make it through what lies ahead in a short few months and then again in a short few years.
Never be afraid to stick up for the underdog or speak your mind, even when you are in the minority. You’ll get braver as time goes on. By the time you finish college you’ll have marched on city hall in defense of gay rights, animal rights, and women’s rights and your future husband will be with you all the way.
Love, your 22 year old self
PS: Don’t forget to laugh.
